Finally, today I got to Do Something – I had been invited to attend a party for the youth orchestras board, which I’d been on so long. It was at the end of their monthly board meeting, and it was to honor two people: the outgoing president and also one of their longest employees, who was leaving her current position as grant-writer to do more things elsewhere. I drove downtown around 6 pm, parked by the library, and did several errands before walking the eight blocks to the building where the meeting was being held (where my friend Z works too!). As the meeting ended, the other guests arrived, and I got to chat with old and new friends for more than an hour. Then JH drove me back to my car (it was quite cold outside).
Then I discovered that D. had arrived at my house half an hour earlier to look for Magic cards for the deck he’s going to play in the regional championship tournament this weekend. I let him know I was on my way, and he waited for me, then we went to J’s house to look for more cards, both those D needed and some J will need for his own deck. We spent about an hour on that, then he went home and I went out for some groceries then relaxed a bit.
Meanwhile, J was having a very long day. He got up in the morning in Florida, then went to Animal Kingdom at Disney World with his family, where he spent hours doing rides and such. Then around 5 pm he said bye to his family there and went to the airport, where he caught a 7 pm flight westward. Eight hours later, he had landed in Eugene, still uncomfortable from having to run a mile in the Salt Lake City airport to make his connection. He drove safely home, ate a big bowl of ice cream while listening to me tell him about my day, then went to bed. Tomorrow, assuming he’s sufficiently wakeful, he’ll work all day then head to Portland with the rest of them for the weekend Magic tournament.
