A cozy weekend
Jan. 18th, 2026 11:56 pmI’ve been having a nice time while J’s in Disneyworld; my cold is about as trivial as it’s possible for a cold to be and still be noticeable (to me, at least, probably not to anybody else). Yesterday I watched a PBS show about Boccherini and Madrid, then later I watched two episodes of anime: the beginning of Food Wars! season 3 (which I’ve seen), and the beginning of Yuri!!! on ICE (which I haven’t). I also read chapters in six (?) books. Today I watched the first episode of the new show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and later an episode of Journeys in Japan (reviewing Isabella Bird’s 1878 travels from Nara to Ise). Earlier I attended an online launch event for that book about Jung and Star Wars, and in the evening I did a walk, then a bunch more reading.
Azalyn also has a “cold” – or rather, some sort of feline upper respiratory illness. On Thursday she started sneezing a bunch and otherwise making an odd sniffing sound whenever she was moving about. She seemed happy enough and was eating well, and although she was still sniffing and sneezing this morning, by late evening she seemed mostly back to normal. I was probably more concerned about all of this than warranted, because I’ve never had a cat with a cold before! Yesterday I realized, oh, of course – all of my cats since Sappho (1980-1993) have been indoor-only cats, so they wouldn’t catch a virus, and Sappho didn’t socialize with other cats, so she wouldn’t have caught one either. Azalyn, on the other hand, goes outdoors for several hours most days and is devoted to socializing with the outdoor cats. For that matter, although they sometimes have runny noses or eyes, I’ve never noticed them sniffing or sneezing like that either, but the internet tells me that outdoor cats get this sort of illness all the time.
