An unusually full day
Jan. 15th, 2026 11:51 pmToday was a full day, in slightly unexpected ways. It was our 4th wedding anniversary (and 28th anniversary of the first time we “met,” online), and it was also S’s birthday. Also, it was symphony night. Yet J and I both woke up feeling mildly ill. I am guessing we both have colds. He had a sore throat and low energy. My energy level was fine (even a bit hyper), but I woke up in the night sneezing and sniffling, then later when I was awake for the day my throat was sore too. Oh well.
When his work day was done, we ate our respective dinners together. I gave him a card, and he’d bought a gift for me with the intention of keeping it for himself if I didn’t want it – and it was a rice cooker, but (probably? I haven’t looked yet) the conventional kind, and I’m trying to avoid PFAS and other microplastics, so I only want to cook in metal, glass, or ceramic containers. So I guess he gets to keep the rice cooker. After dinner, we watched an episode of Castlevania, which seemed appropriate since when we met, we fought a vampire together on our MUD.
Then I decided I would go to the symphony. It was the return of Giancarlo Guerrero, who had been our conductor 2002-2009, then went on to lead the symphony in Nashville and win lots of Grammy awards. They did the Debussy piece about the afternoon of a faun, then a Mozart symphony (#31, “Paris”), then Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique,” which I was especially looking forward to. And I’m pretty sure I was being responsible. I wore a KN95 mask the whole time, and there was no one sitting in the two seats in front of me or the two seats to the left of me (my seat is on the right-hand side of the concert hall when facing the stage). And I left as soon as it was over. I never sneezed or coughed, even though the person right behind me sneezed, as did the person beside the two empty seats in front of me. Maybe everyone in town is mildly unwell.
The tricky bit is that J has big plans for the next 10 days. Tomorrow’s the prerelease for the new Magic set, then he’s flying to Florida for a few days at Disneyworld with his family, then after a few hours here he’s going to Portland for the Magic Regional Championship tournament. We will have to see whether he’s feeling well tomorrow, and he’ll do a Covid test. If he’s Covid-negative and feeling no worse than today, he’ll probably be okay to travel (with a mask).

Date: 2026-01-18 02:52 pm (UTC)So sorry to hear he is sick and you might be, Ugh.
Rice Cookers: I just googled any with no PFAS and there is one out there. You would think all that PFAS would get discontinued, jeez.

Date: 2026-01-18 09:09 pm (UTC)I have a cold, but it's about the most trivial cold possible.
I used Google to see if I could find rice cookers that have a ceramic or stainless steel surface, and I found some lists of "non-toxic" rice cookers. From that I found a Chinese company that has at least two with ceramic surfaces and one with stainless steel, and they look pretty good, except... the ceramic ones haven't been tested by a third-party lab to make sure there's no lead, and the glass one has some flimsy ring inside that can easily detach and cut the user and can't work without it. So I'll probably spend more time researching it another day. At least I'm better aware of the issues now.
