When I bundled up to do tonight’s after-dark walk, I didn’t take into account that it really was freezing out there, and I decided to keep walking past the middle school along the block with the interesting lights in the windows. It’s so pretty after dark – the street one block south is much higher than the one I’m walking on, and many of the houses have three stories of large windows, different shapes, and dimly lit, shining through the douglas-firs. I didn’t take into account that when it’s icy outside, that shaded block is one of the most affected in my immediate neighborhood. Fortunately, I realized that the sidewalk was slippery in time to avoid any actual slipping. I took tiny steps, and I warned the couple walking their two dogs. Once I made it back to the middle school, the ground was dry and safe again. The forecast says 28˚F at night for the next six days, so I’ll have to be more responsible for a while!
