This morning, J. and D. and DG left for Vancouver just after 8 am. I think of it as being an 8-9 hour drive, but they were at the border 7 hours later, having stopped for lunch at a Wendy's somewhere near Seattle (I am guessing Everett). They had to sit in a line of cars at the border for more than an hour, then drove to the hotel, which has views of both the surrounding skyline and the harbor, or rather, "harbour."

J. then called his old friend DM, who married a Vancouverite and lives there, and DM came and drove them to Vancouver's Number One geek bar, according to its promotional materials. D. had left his ID behind in the hotel and isn't 19 anyway, so they ate in an adjacent restaurant, then returned to the hotel to relax.

Meanwhile, I did a bit of random cleaning and a bit of work, and I used the stackable shelves that D. had just given up to build a three-story condo for the porch-cats, who seem quite pleased with it. The kittens have turned the bottom shelf into a combination "dueling chamber" and snug bedroom, and Samantha can sleep right next to it since evidently she doesn't want a shelf of her own.

I also watched the first episode of the modern era of Doctor Who. I had forgotten the scene where Rose and Mickey go out for pizza, except it's not really Mickey, it's an alien that controls plastic. Best dialogue in the show (probably a bit paraphrased):

Rose: If you're an alien, how come you sound like you're from the North?
Doctor: ... Lots of planets have a north!

Time "off"

Today I got to do some things besides work... because my colleague was sick and took most of the day off. Poor G. I hope I don't catch it too. I did some tidying around the yard and a bit of weeding, then later J. and I went to the woods to look at this week's wildflowers.

Just 23 days 'til I get my life back. How dearly I would prefer to be working on papers #1, #2, #3, and #4! (Please, LJ, stop tagging my hash-marked paper numbers...)

Today's highlight was a meeting with Joe and G. Joe's the "cultural change" guy who's always really exciting to talk with; I think G. was impressed in his first real conversation with him. Also it was Joe's birthday!

J. and I had dinner at McMenamin's and then spent the evening getting his house ready for his parents' visit and playing Hollow Knight. We've been working on their new patch, "Update #2." It had "Update #1" in it when we got the game; a third will follow.

A full day

I'm wearing new glasses. My brain has to learn to tune out the bifocal part, and I have to learn to hold my head at a different angle to use the laptop. They're pretty nice, though.

D's new class schedule has no room for band, which is what he was hoping for - now he can see what he needs to do to stay qualified for youth symphony without it.

Also my paper #1 of the four I'm writing this summer reached a new stage of completion; I sent it to our consultant for her input.

We went to dinner again with our visiting guests. Apparently they visit the author Tad Williams on a regular basis! They discovered a new restaurant for us - one that I'd been especially interested in visiting but wasn't thinking consciously about - the Elkhead Brewery. They specialize in ciders and Southern food. Really quite good!

Meanwhile, Oliver the con artist cat used his desperate-and-angry meow technique to cause D. some worry. He called me at the restaurant to ask if he should feed Oliver. No, no, no. I think Oliver has driven Samantha away; she hasn't come to be fed in several days now.

J. has completed five years of employment with his company and gets to select a gift from a special website, which has a rather amusing selection. Lots of dust-busters and golf balls.

We watched J. play a bunch more of Hollow Knight. He certainly got a lot of new skills and abilities tonight. The best seem to be the wall jump, longer sword range, and a new "hurricane" strike with the sword.
