A quieter day
Dec. 27th, 2018 11:36 pmThis morning, J. and D. and DG left for Vancouver just after 8 am. I think of it as being an 8-9 hour drive, but they were at the border 7 hours later, having stopped for lunch at a Wendy's somewhere near Seattle (I am guessing Everett). They had to sit in a line of cars at the border for more than an hour, then drove to the hotel, which has views of both the surrounding skyline and the harbor, or rather, "harbour."
J. then called his old friend DM, who married a Vancouverite and lives there, and DM came and drove them to Vancouver's Number One geek bar, according to its promotional materials. D. had left his ID behind in the hotel and isn't 19 anyway, so they ate in an adjacent restaurant, then returned to the hotel to relax.
Meanwhile, I did a bit of random cleaning and a bit of work, and I used the stackable shelves that D. had just given up to build a three-story condo for the porch-cats, who seem quite pleased with it. The kittens have turned the bottom shelf into a combination "dueling chamber" and snug bedroom, and Samantha can sleep right next to it since evidently she doesn't want a shelf of her own.
I also watched the first episode of the modern era of Doctor Who. I had forgotten the scene where Rose and Mickey go out for pizza, except it's not really Mickey, it's an alien that controls plastic. Best dialogue in the show (probably a bit paraphrased):
Rose: If you're an alien, how come you sound like you're from the North?
Doctor: ... Lots of planets have a north!
