Please check out the new Online Photo Album for [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091's visit to Malaysia in February!

[livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 had won a trip to Kuala Lumpur to play in the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour, so he spent a week in Malaysia. Unfortunately, he was pretty sick the entire time he was there, so my LJ posts are the best documentation of the visit. To read about his trip, click here and read my tagged entries, starting at the bottom.

If he ever has time to write a summary of the trip, I'll add a link here.

Please enjoy the pictures and short video clips!

Today [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 competed with about 150 others for the free trip to Berlin for another Magic Pro Tour event. He ended up going 5-2-1 and finishing just out of the top 8, after which he watched others play for a while, then went out to dinner with a Hall of Famer and some others.

Tomorrow's his last day, and this'll be my last "live" report, as he loses Internet access no later than noon. He'll spend a last afternoon and evening in Kuala Lumpur then embark on the 27-hr trip back home. When he gets there, he'll be able to post the pictures from his trip! I've held off on mentioning the sites, hoping he'd get to make his own post, but that doesn't seem to be happening. So, we're looking forward to photos of:

  • The Kuala Lumpur City Center park, at the base of the Petronas Towers and adjacent to the tournament venue

  • The Butterfly Garden, part of the big Lake Gardens

  • Chinatown's Night Market

  • The Batu Caves and their Hindu temple

  • and of course, random Kuala Lumpur street scenes

  • I'm so much looking forward to it!

And now, I'm off to meet up with R&D at our own local Asian Celebration.

It's mid-afternoon in Kuala Lumpur, and [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 just came back on his brief lunch break to give us an update. They've got 346 players, about a third of whom will advance. In his first round, play went too long, and they decided to draw (a mistake, a draw helps neither of them). In the second round, he lost two of the three games, and in the third, they were again tied but played too slowly, and he ended up conceding to give his opponent a chance to advance.

Thus he's now 0-2-1 (though he won three out of the seven completed games within the rounds). He'll have three more rounds of play with a new deck, but then he'll be out of the main tournament. There are lots of other events, though, and he's looking forward to FNM tonight and PTQ Berlin in the morning.

He says... he's having fun, he doesn't feel like he doesn't belong there (and in particular thinks he was probably better than the first guy), and (a comment for those of you who are familiar with the game) he's glad he knew he was eliminated in time to rare-draft in the second draft (he picked up 14/21 rares). He seems to be in a great mood, and didn't even mention that he's still sick. Good attitude!

[livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 did get out to sightsee, and he did make it back in time for the tournament registration party, but he's feverish and really quite sick. I hope he's getting a good night's sleep before the big day.

Here's how it works. In about 8 hours, he'll show up at the tournament site, then he and the others will get access to the cards from which to create their first decks. They'll play for three rounds, then make all-new decks and play for three more, I guess; at that point if he's at least 4-2 he'll get to continue in the tournament; otherwise he's out but can move on to other exciting activities over the weekend, like trying to qualify to play in Berlin in the fall.

At some point awfully soon, the Wizards of the Coast people should have the Pro Tour preview page up so I can start following along from home. They typically have page after page of tournament coverage. What's taking them so long?

Poor [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 was too sick for sightseeing yesterday. No Batu Caves, no Petronas Towers. He only made it out for meals and to replenish his water supply. (The guidebooks had said to avoid the tapwater there, but bottled water is $10 a jug.) I'm glad that at least he's in a four-star hotel, with broadband.

Update, 10:36 p.m.: I am relieved to report that the water was actually only $2 a jug, and pleased to report that he's feeling better and heading out again (it's Thursday afternoon there, of course).

Kuala Lumpur has a serious air pollution problem, having a geographic configuration much like Los Angeles, and even with spending the hottest part of the day inside, [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 is having a hard time with it. He has two more days to explore the city before the tournament starts.

(I realize that only a quarter of you are friends of his, unlike when I started this journal; I hope the rest of you don't mind hearing about his trip.)

He's leaving on Sunday, and I've created an icon to use if I post about the trip. It comes from this gorgeous photo of Putrajaya Mosque. Putrajaya is just south of Kuala Lumpur, and he probably won't go there, but I love the picture:

Since you're not on [livejournal.com profile] fractal9091's f-list, you probably weren't motivated to click on the link in my earlier post and read about it in his own words. And so now I get the opportunity to bubble over with excitement about this!

[livejournal.com profile] fractal9091 often plays Magic: The Gathering, and he occasionally plays in "PTQ events," which qualify the winner to play in an international professional tournament. He's writing a 15-page paper this weekend, and I can't say it seemed like a really good idea for him to spend Saturday playing Magic, but the idea of Kuala Lumpur sounded so exotic that I kept joking that it would be so cool if he won.

He did. He did win. He is going to Malaysia!!!! They give him plane tickets, and he'll fly there in February and play Magic! I remain stunned.

See fractal9091's account of the day, with illustrations.
