Book club

Today was too foggy and cold to do much outside, though I did cut some blackberry vines. The highlight of the day was book club – we talked about the book set in the Barbizon Hotel, and for next month I have them enthusiastic about reading Annie Bot. BHW had joined our Zoom call from work. She works at a water treatment plant for a town north of us, and it was really cool, because the equipment in the background looked ancient, and in her work uniform she looked like an astronaut! JLS was enthusiastic about the mysteries starring young Mr Darcy and Miss Tilney, but she didn’t realize Miss Tilney’s parents were from Austen too; she just thought she was made up. But Northanger Abbey is my favorite! I hope she’ll read it, now that she knows. I started reading it again too.

I suppose there are two main reasons that Northanger Abbey isn’t more popular or better known. It’s a satire of Gothic romances, and it may not make sense to readers unfamiliar with them, and also Catherine is relatively young and naïve for an Austen heroine. That’s all I can come up with. Henry Tilney is probably my favorite of the Austen men, especially as played by JJ Field, although the Alan Rickman portrayal of Col. Brandon is hard to beat.

I need to read it again. I don't remember the details that well but I do remember I did like it. And I agree that portrayal with Alan Rickman was erm, very good! :)
