The Rise of Kyoshi, by F.C. Yee. I'm a big fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series, and when S. told me that the character I hadn't recognized on my calendar is in a YA novel (not just one of their four-part graphic novels), I ordered it right away. This is the first of two books about Kyoshi, who is an earlier Avatar in the history of this world. She was abandoned as a child in an Earth Nation village, and not only did no one have a clue that she was the new Avatar, they actually thought it was someone else, and she was a servant in his household. (There's only one Avatar at a time - a person who can "bend" (do magic with) all four elements; everyone else can do one or none. But it's not like a child Avatar can just do it; they have to be taught.)

This book tells of the unusual path Kyoshi's life took, from her childhood until she was fully recognized as the Avatar. It was politically complicated and she had to hide out with pirates, basically. There was plenty of emotional complexity, the story was interesting, and I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the show. It ends on a cliffhanger, so it's good that I bought the other Kyoshi book too!

Today I worked on that cost paper thing until the monitor was giving me a headache. Then I watched a new (to me) Babylon 5 episode, and then I mowed J's lawn for Tuesday's book club meeting, because today was the last non-hot day for that. Here is our horrifying forecast... Sunday 104°, Monday 109°!!!, Tuesday 105°, Wednesday 103°, then back to normal soon after that. (In Celsius, that's Sunday 40°, Monday 43°, Tuesday 41°, Wednesday 39°.) I foresee lots of hiding in the house, although I guess I do have to head out mid-day to liberate the cats from J's house. Hm.

Anyway, then I rested my eyes by reading in J's house, keeping the cats company, then I came home and watched the rest of a Hallmark movie to make space for tonight's anime, which I'll have to wait to watch until J's return. The movie was a sequel to Big Sky, the one where a New York teacher and a Montana cop get together with no particular cultural differences *ahem* because she likes country music. This one, naturally, was the story of their engagement and wedding.

Meanwhile, here's what J did with his brother's family and his mom: They visited the Cape Fear Museum, then took the Southpoint Ferry to Fort Fisher, then to a nearby beach where he and his brother did some swimming, then they drove up the peninsula until home again. They ate Mexican food, then his brother played some video games with the kids, then J. watched Babylon 5 with me, then eventually he went to bed.
