Around 5 pm today, I finally finished the current round of revising our cost paper. Now, not only are there all sorts of edits to the paper, but I also drafted a 10-page "supplemental file" to get around the page limits (that's normal for this type of paper), and our "response to review" document is 8 or 9 pages long, too. Naturally, the main paper is now about 7 pages too long, but maybe we can move some of that to the new supplemental file.
After that, I ventured out into the heat twice to get some groceries. The two trips were on purpose - it seemed nicer to walk back and forth twice than to get into my car, and indeed, it was fine. The sky was starting to look smoky in the distance, but it smelled okay, and I even read outside until it got too dark. (I'm rereading Hester some, before the Tuesday book club meeting.)
After I came inside, I finally started setting up the new desktop computer I'd bought back in... March? Seriously? Huh. It turned out not to have a VGA port for my spare monitor, so J. suggested I use the hdmi cable to hook it up to his TV while he's still away. (I was doing all this at his house, to give the cats some company.) That worked fine, then I got the vpn working to my office, but it gave me error messages when I tried accessing the office directories so I stopped for the day.
I'm hoping to stay inside most of tomorrow, the day that's supposed to be so dreadfully hot. I gave the cats at J's house extra food and water, since they'll have to stay inside too. I'm grateful we don't live 55 miles east of here, up in the mountains at McKenzie Bridge - there's a nearby wildfire and my phone suddenly started announcing a "Evacuation Code 3: Go Now" notice out loud while I was trying to chat with J. on Skype. We are probably just fine, or at least we will be when the weather gets back to normal on Thursday or Friday.
