I'm a big fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series, and when S. told me that the character I hadn't recognized on my calendar is in a YA novel (not just one of their four-part graphic novels), I ordered it right away. This is the first of two books about Kyoshi, who is an earlier Avatar in the history of this world. She was abandoned as a child in an Earth Nation village, and not only did no one have a clue that she was the new Avatar, they actually thought it was someone else, and she was a servant in his household. (There's only one Avatar at a time - a person who can "bend" (do magic with) all four elements; everyone else can do one or none. But it's not like a child Avatar can just do it; they have to be taught.)
This book tells of the unusual path Kyoshi's life took, from her childhood until she was fully recognized as the Avatar. It was politically complicated and she had to hide out with pirates, basically. There was plenty of emotional complexity, the story was interesting, and I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the show. It ends on a cliffhanger, so it's good that I bought the other Kyoshi book too!
