On our walk
Sep. 9th, 2014 10:32 pmToday, I coaxed J. into walking along the millrace with me (he usually prefers the river), and we saw... numerous mallards, including one female with a slightly longer, more graceful neck; a striking male wood duck and his mate; and a Steller’s jay. No geese today.
Oh, speaking of big and sometimes obnoxious birds, this afternoon there was a flock of at least 10 wild turkeys standing around the middle of the street, where a Siamese cat most likely related to Lillian sat, transfixed.
Anyway, on our walk, there’s this one apple tree that hangs over the millrace, near the urban farm, and it’s huge, and covered with apples. Hundreds of ’em. Some are red and some are yellow with red streaks. We wondered if the ducks will eat apples that fall into the water. J. picked up a big, fleshy walnut, newly fallen from a walnut tree, and rolled it into the river, and four ducks swam over to check out the oddity.
