Books. I did finish Mary Douglas’s Natural Symbols. I tried reading Molly Gloss’s The Dazzle of Day, but it was too close to “bleak literature” for me, I think. Chapter 1, someone is unhappy and ambivalent. Chapter 2, someone our PoV character cares about dies. (Then I set it aside for a couple of weeks.) Chapter 3, people are grieving the person who died – I liked this chapter better, probably because its PoV was a young person. I’m now 27% of the way through, and it’s not a long book, but I don’t know whether I’ll finish. Apparently there’s a gratuitous sexual assault coming up, too. It’s too bad, because the premise of the book is intriguing – a group of Quaker colonists, on a spaceship, have to decide whether to make their peace with the fact that their target planet is worse than expected, and they go through their reflective Quaker process to decide.

For June… Terry Tempest Williams’ Refuge? Or is that too depressing too? Maybe I’ll try, or maybe I’ll switch to something more upbeat, depending on my emotional stamina as the month goes on. More upbeat could be Douglas Hofstadter’s I Am a Strange Loop, which I’ve added to my pile as a sort of sequel to Gödel, Escher, Bach, or possibly David Abrams’ Becoming Animal. Or the next book in the Jemisin trilogy. I’m giving myself lots of options because I’ve already finished eight backlog books in the first five months.

Boxes. Nothing with the boxes.

Beyond Beef. My conclusion was that to improve my dietary health, I shouldn’t worry about beef or not right now, but I should add fiber. My experiments showed that refried beans seem better than oats, but also my digestion has been iffy for much of the month anyway, so I probably shouldn’t come to conclusions. I expect I’ll be better when allergy season is over. (Also, I ate salmon twice.)

Good luck with your protein experiments, it's tricky. And sometimes things agree with and then other times they don't. I want to re-explore hummus, maybe make my own from canned chick peas. They take way too long to cook.
