This afternoon, I learned that a friend is doing their doctoral defense in two weeks! I emailed them, and we made a plan to get together this weekend, as they’re soon moving across the country for their new job.

J went to a memorial event for a co-worker, and while he was out I did a short walk in the neighborhood. Three deer walked in parallel with me for about a block. Then I saw a friend and her dog, and we chatted a bit.

When J got home, we had to work for hours on their Europe reservations. We learned new things! For example, even though it’s a European Union that’s supposedly created a combined economic system, it turns out a train reservation for the exact same seats on the exact same train can cost considerably more if you buy it from the Belgian rail system than from the German rail system. Also, within the German website, when they’re having you choose your seats, the part of the sketch that looks like a barrier between parts of the car is, in fact, a table! So it’s quite desirable for friends to sit on either side of that rectangle, instead of being something undesirable that blocks them from each other.

When that was finally done, we turned our attention to the trip he’s taking tomorrow and looked at the schedule a bit. This is a very full summer.

Booking those train tickets sounds tricky. The UK system is bad enough with complex pricing, depending on when you book and when you want to travel. Doing it across borders must be worse.

The UK was messy when we were there! Going south from London, we had to disembark at Gatwick and go and buy new tickets to our destination.

Oh my gosh, I read this wrong...

"J went to a memorial event for a co-worker, and while he was out I did a short walk'

I thought at first the J was an I and that changed everything! :D :D

No no, it was my bad reading, it was just funny when I realized it.
