WEB leader
Sep. 9th, 2013 11:57 pmTomorrow is 6th grade orientation at D’s middle school, and he’s one of the 30 8th graders who volunteered to help, so he’ll be there too. He’s been in training for two days (today and Friday) as a WEB Leader (“Where Everyone Belongs”). The ~150 incoming 6th graders are assigned in groups to two or three 8th graders per group, who have a long list of “getting to know each other and the school” activities to go through with them.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t until he was ready for bed that he remembered that he was supposed to learn and practice the two games in their manual that he’s scheduled to lead tomorrow – so we got roped into an emergency practice session. The “favorites” game was easy enough; J. and I (and Lillian by proxy) answered a bunch of questions from a list. The “names” game, though, was tough, and he had to bring in four teddy bears to help fill out our circle of students. J. got bored and started tossing Elijah (the polar bear) into the air. Then Lillian got hold of one of the “balls” we were passing (a Winnie the Pooh toy, not to be confused with the four much larger teddy bear students), and she started wrestling it and trying to tear off its red shirt. In the end, wacky fun. With luck, he’ll remember how the game works tomorrow.
