It’s all about the narrative

eve_primeToday D. discovered a never-played RPG in his Playstation game stack, the 10-year-old Dragon Warrior VII, and snuggled up to play it on the couch where I was working on my laptop. He loves the art, despite its age; he loves the witty dialogue; and he loves the puzzles, exclaiming, “That’s ingenious!” and the like, every few minutes. It took more than three hours of play before he got to the first battle, and he didn’t even mind.
I’ve made a fair amount of progress work-wise, despite a new migraine descending on me this morning, and I hope to keep going for the next hour or two. I’ve been watching the Oregon-USC game – 2:18 min left, and the Ducks have pulled within 3 points and just recovered a fumble. This has been their most suspenseful game so far, or rather, for quite some time there was no suspense at all because they were down by so many points (24 a while ago). Now it’s at 1:30, first down... Another first down... Incomplete pass. Shall I just blog the rest of the game? They’ve made it across mid-field. Clock ticking, under a minute, okay whew they got another first down. Only 38 seconds, time out USC. It would be a very long field goal. Kenjon Barner finds a hole, it’s inches to the next first down, now they’ve got it. Now 14 seconds, about to try a field goal? Oof, there’s a play with no progress and only 7 seconds left. Oops, false start. Career long attempt for the kicker. Alejandro Maldonado. Wow that’s a long way, 42 yards. Another time out. Will Oregon become the #3 team in the country, or will we plummet? Whistle blows, penalty against the defense. Now it’ll be a 37-yard attempt. No good! “USC upsets Oregon. Another big player in the BCS drama falls.” Aww.
