Today was all about the Halloween. I sent “Casual Santa” off to school, in his pajamas, Santa cap, red fuzzy jacket, and black slippers, with a pillow stuffed in to make a huge belly. Later I bought the orange lights he wanted, and some purple ones to surprise and delight him (as they did). We spent a bunch of time cleaning the porch and stringing the lights: orange along the picket fence and purple in a tree. Then, after dinner, “Assassin Pig” got all dressed up and went off with R. to meet his friends.

I waited for trick-or-treaters. And I waited. Finally, at 6:50 p.m., a few arrived, and suddenly I had had 15 of them. After half an hour, I had had 29 of them! (more than usual) and I was nearly out of candy. I rushed to the store for more Skittles and Starbursts... but it was 45 minutes before more trick-or-treaters arrived, by which point I was wondering if the evening was done. Then we had a few more, and a few more, and I suppose about 43 all told. Around 8:30 p.m., I retrieved “Assassin Pig” and brought him home, where he dumped out most of the candy, stripped off the katana and daggers and bandana and weird arrangement of purplish Mardi Gras beads strung across his back like a holster, and put on the Santa cap and red jacket again so that we could visit three more houses in the neighborhood before we retired.

I ignored being sick for most of the day, but now that I’m not busy Halloweening I realize that I am exhausted. During the trick-or-treating and afterwards, I read Gillian Bradshaw’s The Sun’s Bride, which was nicely distracting. Our hero was a poor-but-honest-and-sensitive ship’s helmsman (and de facto captain) from Rhodes in 246 B.C. who has to deal with pirates and court intrigue.
