On my mind: Math
Mar. 3rd, 2011 09:42 pmToday I learned that D’s entire fifth-grade class has been doing the same math, rather than being grouped by ability as in previous years. This year it’s actually relevant, because the fifth-graders at the other schools have been getting the option of sixth-grade math, which lets them take pre-algebra next year, and that means long-term repercussions if D. and his schoolmates have to miss out on this opportunity. I’ve e-mailed his teacher to get a better idea of the situation, and he hasn’t written back yet. Next I guess I get to find out which math concepts D’s still lacking, to see if we can supplement at home before the late-spring placement test.
In other news, at work we had a “Congratulations, you’re becoming a grandpa!” party for H, a surprise event, with quite a lavish array of presents. H. is well-pampered, party-wise, but a generous host himself.
