I'm listening to my "Witches' Brew" CD -- my parents had the record when I was a girl, and I found it at a CD store five or six years ago. It's got Saint-Saëns' "Danse Macabre," Moussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain," Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz," and others. I always listen on Halloween. I love it.

We started Halloweening after D's nap -- first we watched Scooby Doo and the Loch Ness Monster, then we made chocolate cupcakes. R. took D. to my sister's to trick-or-treat, then I changed into the Christmas tree dress (here's a not terribly flattering picture from 1998 -- I had to stay close to electrical outlets). I lit the pumpkins and started watching Ghostbusters II. When the boys got back, I took D. trick-or-treating in my mom's neighborhood and then to my boss's house, then we came back, collected R., and went around our own neighborhood. He got quite a lot of candy -- everyone buys enough for lots of kids, but only a dozen or so show up, so ample is given to each kid -- and a pretty yarn god's eye from the group home for developmentally disabled adults. We met the students newly renting next door, and the kitten the English couple had acquired on Friday ("Buttercup"). Awfully cold outside -- 40 -- but D. was cozy in his tiger costume. Then we decorated the cupcakes and watched the rest of the Ghostbusters movie, and concluded by going out to see the pale yellow moon illuminating the clouds in the eastern sky.

First day in eight without construction noise. What a blessing to hear instead the breezes, the coming and going of neighbors and their dogs, and the almost languid drone of single-engine planes passing by overhead.
