Anticipating Niebuhr
May. 22nd, 2004 06:02 pmIndian food for dinner, and then we're going to watch that movie with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah. I started reading the biography of Reinhold Niebuhr that I got at the library a week ago. Since I've read up on modern Jewish (Heschel, Buber, etc.) and renegade Catholic (Matthew Fox) religious writers, it seemed an oversight to not have learned about Niebuhr, reputedly the preeminent modern Protestant thinker. All I knew before this was that he was a liberal and a "towering intellect." So far, though, the book is only interesting in the generic sense that the life of any creative person is interesting. I am looking forward to finding something "useful" in it.
