I rewarded myself for getting all the most pressing things done at work by going to the street faire on campus, which is colorful and interesting to walk through even though there's seldom anything I would actually think of buying. It's kind of like Saturday Market moved to E. 13th. Well, it's very much like that, but on a smaller scale, with many of the same food vendors in particular: generic Asian, Thai, Indian, Afghani, Chinese, Japanese (if teriyaki counts), Mexican, pseudo-Italian (fried ravioli?), Peruvian, Philly cheesesteak. Oh, and caramel corn. The other vendors sell the typical array of extravagantly dyed very thin cotton dresses and blouses that are supposed to look Indian (as in from India), some tie dye, Peruvian wool and alpaca winter garments, hemp clothes, and beer/drug-promoting t-shirts; cactus and bonsai plants (low-maintenance for dorm rooms), silver jewelry and other bangles, some pretty neat-looking colorful paper lamps, nice candles, very natural soaps, etc. A couple years ago I bought a book about the Gaia hypothesis from a fellow who teaches biology in private classes; let's see if I can find his organization again. Aha, here we go: ProtoTista, which is about "chaos, complexity, emergence, life, symbiosis, Gaia, & their implications for life on Earth."
