Lessons learned

J. finally has tickets to visit in mid-October. We learned several things. First, strangely, the redeye can be a lot more expensive than the daytime flight. Up until last night, both flights were $318 plus fees, but tonight the redeye (which we'd preferred, as he'd miss less class, etc.) went up to $479 while the day flight was still $318.
Second, Orbitz (which we'd used with satisfaction in previous years) is now evil! We found a redeye option on a different airline that would even have gotten him here an hour earlier, and at the lower price, so he went to grab it, but it said it was gone. Then he wanted to take the next best option, but he would have missed most of Wed. afternoon here, and I wasn't so sure about that and wanted to consider it a few minutes. So by the time he tried to take it, it was gone too! So then he tried another option for $40 more, and I still wasn't thrilled, and by the time I agreed, it was gone too! Much consternation! So then... we started over, and it claimed the original flights were still there. In fact, every time we started over, it offered up that entire selection of flights. So indecision hadn't cost us anything; these flights had never been there. Stressful! I wonder how many times one would have to click on "book it" to get a flight through Orbitz that would actually get ticketed.
