Today I went back to the Musicking conference for the keynote address, which was by Ayana Smith, a music professor at Indiana University. She's an expert on both Italian opera and early 20th century African American music, and the talk was about her book, published last year, on how to incorporate diversity and alternative voices into music education. There were only 15 people in the audience, all of whom were probably current or former faculty members except for me, but we were quite enthusiastic about what she had to say and the way she said it. I would buy her book but it's very expensive, since it's from Routledge - even after the special promotional discount I think it was still $53 - so I asked the library to find a copy for me.

My friend GP slipped out a bit early, just as she had on Tuesday, and I commented about it to HR, the woman running the event, who would probably know everything about GP since she and her husband live in GP's house since GP and her husband retired to Italy, and I assume GP is staying with her. Sure enough, not only did HR tell me that GP has been unwell since her return to Oregon but I also got a couple of messages from GP this evening about her unwellness. How frustrating for her - travel all this way and not get to spend much time with the many, many people she came to see.

Later we had our mini book club and discussed Legends & Lattes, which everyone loved. J went to sword class without his equipment because he pulled a muscle yesterday, but he did get some exercise while there, and after that he helped D do his taxes.

How sad for your friend to not be feeling well. hope it isn't anything too serious.

Your mini book club is working out well, I am happy for you that you started it.
