My preferred bread is whole wheat sourdough, and there's a local kind (well, from Cottage Grove, 19 miles south) that tastes just like what I make, when I go to the trouble, and it has the right shape and slicing and such to make it generally more convenient than homemade bread. It costs about $7 a loaf, which seems like a lot, but I like it.

However, the bakery isn't entirely reliable. They usually restock at Market of Choice on Tuesdays, but not this week, and the shelf at Capella was also empty then. I went back today, and Capella had a sign saying the bakery would be closed for "two to three weeks," whatever that means. They didn't have any good alternatives, so I went to Market of Choice, which had several options. When I tried the Bread Stop bakery's whole wheat sourdough, it tasted like it had way, way, way too much salt, so I'm not trying that again. I did find a loaf made by Hideaway Bakery, a very small bakery not far from my house, and it had lots of other grains besides the whole wheat. But guess what it cost? It wasn't labelled so I didn't learn the price until I was paying for it. This was a $12 loaf of bread! That's about a dollar per slice! Something tells me I'll be eating plain sourdough in a week or so, since it's much too warm to bake my own right now...

That is just way too much for bread. My favorite whole wheat sourdough is by a local bakery called Zeppole and like you a specific bread, it is the only one I will eat. It costs $5 at the Co-op and $6 at their bakery. (Both fairly nearby). If they are out of it at both places, I feel a little frantic. That is a good idea to make some but right, not in the summer heat! I also try not to bake in the summer except Gene wants a special rhubarb desert and he bought the ingredients as my neighbor gave us some rhubarb. His all time favorite desert from his mid-west upbringing, ick.

We have another local place that makes excellent tortillas, so if I can't get the bread I prefer, I get their tortillas, not the same at all but very good.

I feel your pain. I sure hope they are not going out of business!
Awe, Cottage Grove. It sounds like a special place these days.

this is what i am trying so far. i just take out like 3 slices and but in the bread box, then the rest can stay fresh in the fridge but each day i will have a soft slice, lol. i prefer nutritious bread too.

Wow! That is expensive bread. Obviously it's not as hot here as it is where you are, but that's why I like my bread machine for making bread. It doesn't heat the kitchen like the main oven does. I just throw the ingredients in and it does the whole mixing, kneading, rising and baking, but my machine will just bake, so if you made you're own dough, you could use a machine to bake it.
