Set in 1930, Maisie has to return to France while she investigates the fate of two young men who were lost in the first World War. Her closest female friend wants the trip to be a holiday, and she does relax for a bit at the friend's home in the beautiful city of Biarritz, on the Atlantic coast in Basque country, but because Maisie had been a nurse during the war, the very idea of France is altogether stressful for her.
As with the other two books, very few of the turnings in the mystery plot surprised me, but the last two chapters did contain surprises, and this time the author was more careful with the point of view, such that it's plausible that Maisie had realized things at the same time I did, without yet revealing that she had done so.
Okay, time to go look out the window and see if the snow has resumed - there was a bit earlier in the evening but it didn't stick then.
