So, the two most likely ways yesterday's little newt could have gotten into J's kitchen were (1) through the front door, when the main door is open and the glass/screen door isn't fully latched (our best explanation for how Ambrose the kitten got in last week, and sat on the indoor front door mat looking out the glass), or (2) from under/behind the sink or dishwasher, if there is some mysterious access to the outside world nearby. J had thought the newt was generally heading from the dishwasher toward the refrigerator when he first found it.

That led J. to speculate that if it had come in from just outside the kitchen, maybe there are newts living in his hot tub! This seemed highly implausible to me, but before I came home I went out in the dark to check. No newts in the hot tub, certainly... but there was the back half of one poking out from beneath the hot tub, nearest to the kitchen wall. Ha! We should investigate further in daylight.

Other things today: I did some copying at my office and returned books to both libraries, we had Thai food delivered and D joined us for that, and J. and I worked some in parallel so he could make some progress on his mentorship project.
