Day 621: Kitchen newt!
Nov. 27th, 2021 11:54 pmThis evening, J. went into his kitchen and let out a yelp. I asked what was happening, and he wanted me to see for myself - to hurry and to bring the phone, for its camera function. And there was a salamander, waddling along confusedly on the floor! More specifically, one of our local rough-skinned newts, maybe half or two-thirds the size of the ones we'd see in the neighborhood creek in April. A juvenile? But however would it have gotten into his kitchen?
(He'd never seen one in his yard before. I'd seen one in mine, but it was many years ago.)
It appeared to be headed for the refrigerator, but fortunately instead he managed to herd it into a paper bag. We shouldn't touch them, as their skin is toxic, but fortunately it could be maneuvered the same way as one would maneuver a spider. Then he released it outdoors.
