Day 602: Tiny world
Nov. 8th, 2021 11:55 pmEven though our metropolitan area has about a quarter of a million people, we have "small world" experiences here all the time. This evening, J and I had dinner with DG at the Taphouse downtown, before they went to play Magic, and I saw one of my coworkers come in, Jeff G--. I waved but didn't invite him over; he'd once interviewed with J. and others for a job at J's employer and didn't get hired. After we'd left, though, DG said, "hey, was that Jeff G--?" Turns out that he knew him too. (G. was also there, for open mic night, so I got to say hi to him as well.) But that's not at all remarkable, compared with this:
I've been reading a book linking philosophy and neuroscience, by two local authors, and I'm now in the thick of the neuroscience chapters. Even though I have a PhD in psychology, I really know very little about the brain, but I've been wading through anyway, using my dictionary with some regularity, wondering things like how do they decide which brain regions to call anterior, versus ventral, versus frontal, since all three words mean the same thing? Anyway, I read a fair amount today, but I also took lots of breaks to procrastinate my progress, and in one of those breaks I decided to look on the Internet to see if I could figure out where our friends JC and MSC now live. DG had visited them and said it was a cute house at a particular intersection, so I looked on the street view of Google Maps. I did find a cute house at that intersection. He said the owner was thinking of selling, and if they did, JC and MSC would definitely want to buy it. So I wondered who the owner of this little house was, and I looked online... and it was the author of the book I was supposed to be reading.
I took it as a message from the universe to get back to work.
(I guess it's a rental, as his home is a few miles south of us, on the other side of Spencer Butte in my icon. And it turns out that that's not the house the C family has rented anyway... but it was a pretty great coincidence.)
