Aug. 28th, 2021 11:00 pmLast Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal, by George Packer. This short book is essentially a very long essay with several themes. The core of the book is his "four Americas" essay that I reviewed in my blog a while back. Before that comes a chapter on what it was like to live through 2020, and afterward we get Packer's idea of what America needs - more of a sense that we are all equals, in it together. At one point he discusses the lives of three Americans dedicated to making the country better: Horace Greeley and Frances Perkins (people I was familiar with), and Bayard Ruskin (whom I was not).
