Day 507: Office move
Aug. 4th, 2021 11:55 pmOur company's trying to minimize its use of the building for which we're the primary tenant, and our current strategy is to move everyone off the desirable 4th (top) floor so we can rent it out. We even had a company lined up to take it, but they backed out last week. Most people are moving to the 3rd floor, but the scientists (and a few others) who mostly work at home are going to share a 2nd floor "Scientist Hotel" so we can have a workspace when we need it. This makes sense; I spend maybe 20 minutes a week in my current 4th floor office. Also, we're welcome to take home any furniture from our existing offices, and there will be opportunities to buy some of the rest, so I'm excited about that. I'm currently planning to take my medium tall and tall bookcases, my computer desk, my personal chair, my two-drawer wooden cabinet, and my lamp. I could also take my 4' table, my second chair, my full desk, and my two four-drawer cabinets, but I probably don't want them. I could use more tall bookshelves, though - I could put them in my hallway where I currently have a broken horizontal file cabinet. The trick is that we have to transport it all home. We thought about asking DG if he could help with his pickup truck, but it looks like I could rent a 10' U-Haul for under $30 to do it all in one trip.
Anyway, today I went in and looked at it all. I recycled a few things, and I brought home two file boxes of papers, the books I wanted, and my various art prints and calendar collection. I also discarded... a box of black currant tea that expired in 1999, several packages of dehydrated split pea soup that expired in 1998, and a can of chili that I don't even want to think about. I emailed colleagues about the remaining books, the various VHS tapes, etc. There's still a lot to sort, but maybe I'll be more in the mood for recycling once it no longer looks like a workable office space?
Meanwhile, D. worked an extra hour and a half today (scheduled for seven and a half but had to stay for nine to finish it all). So adult!
