Day 486: D's "job" so far
Jul. 14th, 2021 11:51 pmThe continuing saga of D's first summer as an employee...
As I mentioned, last week he was offered a job doing bakery packaging for our neighborhood supermarket. (There's a little shopping center in the middle of our residential neighborhood, with a supermarket half a block from our house.)
He was told to report on Monday at 10:30 a.m. So he did. But they were double-booked for 10:30, so was sent away for an hour, then returned and spent a few minutes doing paperwork. Then he was told to come back on Tuesday to complete the paperwork (i.e., bringing his social security card, etc.); he was home by noon.
When he got there on Tuesday, he was told their "system" was down and to come back on Wednesday at 11 a.m. That was today, and he finished the paperwork then came home again. Now he's waiting for his security badge, which might be ready tomorrow, or it might not. Once he has that, he can start doing some computer-related training. As of this evening, there was no word about the badge.
Every time he goes there, we expect he'll be there for up to 8 hours, but then he's home again in a few minutes. He certainly didn't expect to have so much idle time this week. Fortunately, he doesn't need the income, and it's less than a five-minute walk from the store to our house; it's not like someone taking multiple buses from the far side of town.
I hope he'll get to start doing some actual work soon!
Meanwhile, on Monday his new boss started up a conversation with me when we were buying our groceries (she says she's jealous of his new job; much quieter than her own, I imagine). I asked what he needed for clothing, and D. thus ordered two black buttoning shirts online on Monday evening. The one that arrived from Amazon today was expected to do so, but he wasn't expecting the one that was here by noon from, supposedly, England. He thought it would get here a week from now. I'm impressed with the idea that a person could order something locally on Monday, get it shipped, and have it here 40 hours later, let alone wherever that one came from. The return address was in the U.K. but surely not.
