Day 438: Driving practice

eve_primeToday was our sixth time of driving practice for D. We did it I think three times during winter break, then once during spring break, then a few weeks ago he decided he wanted to apply himself, so now our plan is to do it late evening on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. It's only happened twice since then because my car broke, but then J. decided it would be okay if I took D. out in his car (that is, letting us use his car without him in it, in charge). D's getting much better at steering, and it's also been going much more smoothly since he realized that much of the time the car just coasts along, with one's foot neither on the gas pedal nor the brakes. (He'd thought it had to be one or the other.)
Anyway, when we switched to J's car, we started back from first principles, just circling around the middle school parking lot then eventually venturing out into the street to do a loop with the school's driveway. Today we did that a while, then went off to a side street, avoided all the parked cars, then came back past the school and all the way home and into the driveway.
It's quite marvelous that our neighborhood is so quiet late at night. We only saw one other moving car the entire time. Once he's quite comfortable with all that, we'll be able to practice when others are driving too.
