The premise is: The world is magical, and there are so many monsters that only half the children in magical families make it to adulthood. However, if you send your teenager to this particular magical school, they have a slightly better chance of surviving - but only slightly, as the school is full of monsters trying to kill them too.
At first I thought, this book is Novik's bid for a film contract, as it's non-stop action. Then I realized that it's much too violent. The only way the reader gets downtime is when our protagonist takes a few pages to reflect on the situation.
It's very different from her Temeraire series, which we enjoyed - Napoleonic Europe with military dragons - but also very good.
