Day 431: Time-wasting
May. 20th, 2021 11:56 pm*sigh* Almost three years ago, I got the idea of creating an online program for people who want to quit using e-cigarettes. Almost nobody was doing any work in that area. We submitted a proposal, which got a pretty good score but failed to get funding. Then this very well funded foundation created an app for teens and young adults and got a lot of publicity. That's fine; we were planning to focus on adults; we revised ours and submitted it again. Again, a good score, no funding. We did it a third time, and this time the reviews were exceptionally sloppy. We decided to add more technology, as that might make it more fundable (or at least a bit more "exciting" to the reviewers). We were going to submit that in February, but the NCI person said the funding mechanism with a June deadline would make more sense, so I set it aside for a while.
Yesterday I got it out again and spent a bunch of time thinking about the study design, and today I exchanged emails with my two colleagues. I then checked for newly published studies - there were 21 of them. That's great for the field, but a lot of work to go through. Then I looked at the recently funded grants... and discovered one that started back in September, to a grad student, which is doing just about exactly what we'd be trying to do.
Time to give up? It looks like it, really.
What else about today? Hm. Rain. I got caught in a shower coming back down the hill from checking on the bird nests in the cemetery. Also, we've resumed D's driving practice, starting back from the beginning, this time with J's car. It was his fifth lesson, but now we're going to try for three times a week.
