Day 412: Magic-playing and an oratorio
May. 1st, 2021 11:54 pmSo our friends came to play Magic, for the first time since maybe September, and we were out in the garage because it was too breezy further outdoors. I only played with D, a two-game match, and that was fine. I got to play both of my fancy dragons, but my deck didn't have much beyond that, and they were fragile. That is, D. knew I had the dragons so he knew to have removal spells in his deck. We didn't get to see MSC, as she got tired doing cleaning. I'd rather she rested than pressed herself to socialize.
Then J. had Rolemaster and I put on headphones and finally listened to and watched this year's oratorio, from the Musicking conference two weeks ago. This one was "San Nicola di Bari" by Giovanni Bononcini and Silvio Stampiglia. The language was poetic, and the music was pretty neutral - sometimes quite lively and interesting. The story, however, wasn't much, especially not by the standards of the "St. Cecilia" they did two years ago. The storyline was, young St. Nicholas's parents wanted to be sure he'd stay on the path of virtue when he went off to school. He had a friend who enjoyed the emphemeral pleasures of the flesh, but St. Nicholas got him to repent, and everyone was impressed by the valuable life St. Nicholas would surely have as an adult.
