About 10 years ago, after we had the dying cottonwood tree in our backyard removed, and new soil brought in, R. created massive flowerbeds, much deeper than either of us were willing to maintain, and now it's mostly reverting to grass. Grass with tree sprouts, ever-spreading ivy, and alas, blackberry vines. This year I'm working on clearing out all the blackberry vines in the flowerbeds - if I can get all the way around the main border this month, then check every month or so for any new sprouts, maybe it will be okay? That's my justification for prioritizing this task over all the dozens of other pending garden tasks, anyway. I can do 20-30 minutes a day before I get too tired, and I've done it for three days now. I estimate another four will do the trick, plus whatever time it takes to collect all the vines I've tossed on the lawn. I should remove the ivy too, but it's a lower priority.

There are three small patches of blooming daffodils, visible from the kitchen window, and I think another hidden behind the red-cedar that's grown up next to the apple tree. Arnold's first wife Margaret's daffodils are still alive, too, but never bloom. I think there will be a couple of tulips. Also there are daylilies and probably geraniums, along with the survivors among the shrubs R. planted, the Altissimo rose, and the apple tree.

My neck and shoulders are feeling rather worn out today, and I'm guessing it's from the yardwork. I wanted to use the hot tub, but the colony of tiny ants was there under the cover again, and I had to clean them all up first.
