Eventually I learned that it's a sequel to Touchstone, so I got the latter from the library... but the prologue was so dark and creepy that I set it aside for months. A dead baby, a mentally troubled man considering suicide, and an emotionally detached person creating a bomb to use in a terrorist act... no thank you! Then I picked it up again and discovered that it's not so bad, really. There are disturbing, creepy people, but there are also brave and good people, both idealistic and otherwise, and we spent most of our time with the latter as they try to figure out what's going on. Even so, I'll probably take a break before I read the other book... :)
