Pizza and conversation
Jun. 19th, 2004 11:45 pmM., S., and my mom came over for pizza this evening, after M&S got back from the Prefontaine Classic (a major track and field event), and we had much interesting discussion. Much of it was about R's topic du jour, the current rise of anti-Semitism among the Left, and related discussions of anti-Semitism vs. anti-Zionism. We also heard more about Arnold's career, which he's spoken about so little with us. M. told us that when Arnold worked for the U.N., one of his positions was to oversee the distribution of food to needy children in Nepal. Ships would arrive in Calcutta with donated food, and Arnold had to supervise its transport through India, to the borders, into trucks, and over the mountains, to eventually arrive at schools where it was fed to children in a free breakfast program he set up. It was greatly frustrating to try to minimize the losses from theft, weather, and incompetence during the long trip from Calcutta, but surely rewarding too.
