Delgani concert #3 of the season
Mar. 21st, 2017 11:50 pmTonight's concert by the Delgani String Quartet featured two new compositions and then Smetana's autobiographical quartet, with the new compositions intended to be in the same theme. The first of them was by an older and highly accomplished composer, Greg Steinke, who used poetry by a Native American friend of his as his inspiration. (I don't like saying "Native American" as the composer did; I'd rather give his tribal affiliations, but now that I've looked the man up online I see that he was Chippewa, Iroquois, Choctaw, and Cherokee, so I guess being more general makes sense.) The piece was interesting and creative... but I didn't find the imagery from the music matched the poetry at all.
The second new piece was by a 25-year-old Chinese-Canadian composer, Roydon Tse, with each of the five movements inspired by a city where he'd lived: Hong Kong, Eastbourne (England), Edmonton, Vancouver, and Toronto. This one was more interesting than the other, in my opinion, and I'd like to hear it again.
