A very apt book
Jun. 18th, 2005 09:58 pmToday I read Summer King, Winter Fool, the last of the three of Lisa's books I'd checked out of the library a couple of months ago. I recommend it. I'd wanted to be sure to finish it before starting my summer reading list, which I'm impatient for, and when I started the book I realized how very appropriate for today it really was. The dust jacket says, "Goldstein transports us into another world, of gods and kings and poetmages, in which the god of summer has fallen in love with the human world and so chosen not to reascend into the heavens and permit the changing of the seasons. The long winter is upon the world."
Very suitable for today indeed -- soon after 1 p.m., we had our first thunderstorm and downpour, then around 5 p.m. R. came in from work and urged us outside to look at the great dark cloud that had just moved over us from the south:

We went out into the street to watch the storm start and were rewarded with several flashes of lightning before the rain started, forcing our retreat to the porch, where we watched the storm until it had quieted again. I tried to get pictures of the lightning but am not skilled enough for that, even using the half-pressed shutter-button trick. Looking northwestward from the porch:

So is summer coming to Eugene this year? It's not in the five-day forecast...
In other news, our nearest Korean restaurant has disappeared, perhaps a casualty of the big Willamette Plaza remodelling project. Eugene has lots of Korean restaurants, but none of the others are very convenient to home, alas. But meanwhile, apparently Tsunami Books has been saved.
