Those soothing fractals...
May. 11th, 2004 09:44 amYesterday's Register-Guard described the research of UO physics professor Richard Taylor, who's discovered that having fractals of dimensionality 1.3 to 1.5 in the background lowers people's physical stress levels, in experiments. The article notes that 1.3 to 1.5 is the dimensionality most often seen in nature (e.g., trees, clouds), and also curiously happens to show up in those drip paintings by Jackson Pollack! As a practical application, he suggests that office workers who can't gaze at nature out a window should have something equivalent to look at. (Full article)
