I finished reading The Hobbit to D. today, and I like his ending better than Tolkien’s, who has Bilbo reaching for his tobacco. You know how, on his journey, Bilbo often wishes he were home in his own cozy hobbit-hole, “and not for the last time”? At the end, D. says, he should have noted that he missed the adventuring life, “and not for the last time.”
