Lane County Fair
Aug. 20th, 2006 04:22 pmI ended up passing on the Unitarians' Blessing of the Animals service (I've wanted to go to one of those since seeing it on Vicar of Dibley) so I could get more sleep and thus have energy for the county fair. I had fun and stayed longer than intended. First we took a tour through the bunnies, guinea pigs, chickens, pigeons, exotic fowl, and sheep 'til we got to the goats and said hi to SR, my colleague, who is also a goat-farmer. Then we wandered through the foods and arcades and then bought tickets for the kiddy rides. D. went on a "space ship" one that's the standard kiddy type with the ride units projecting on spokes from a rotating center, then he went on his first roller coaster (kid-sized but with a cool tiger motif) with his daddy:

After that I dragged them through the grange exhibit (have to get my annual fix of agriculture), and D. voted on best scarecrow (he liked the pirate). As fond as I am of the Long Tom Grange and their internationally famous fund-raising calendars of naked men, I have to say it was unfortunate that they'd chosen to include a sandwich in their exhibit that was way past moldy by the last day of the fair. Oh well. Next we went to the photography competition, and then we viewed the quilts, and then the kids' art competition. We then got our requisite greasy meal: a philly cheese steak sandwich and a giant block of curly fries. I was feeling wilted from the heat (it was about 90 by this point), and even standing in the mist booth wasn't sufficiently refreshing, so I came home. The boys stayed for more rides but have just returned, and now we're all going to chill for a while.
Added: Oh, I forgot to say, we got into the fair for free!
