To Ride a Rising Storm, by Moniquill Blackgoose. Nampeshiweisit #2. This time it’s Anequs’s first summer break from the dragon academy, followed by the beginning of fall term. In the first book, we mostly learned about the local Indigenous communities and the local “Anglish” (what we would call Anglo-Americans). Now we’re getting more diversity – there’s a new major character who’s this world’s equivalent of Jewish (and Polish), there’s an adult Indigenous woman from the Great Lakes area who has a dragon of the same breed as Anequs’s dragon, and there’s a riotously amusing professional trickster character from this world’s England. Anequs is navigating personal relationships – she’s negotiating intimate relationships with her proposed male partner and proposed female partner (who firmly tell her what’s what – they’re not prepared to be openly rebellious like she is), and she’s also helping her privileged roommate shed some of her biases. This roommate, Marta, may eventually be a great character. Anequs’s autistic best buddy, Sander, is already a great character – I hope the two will get together. The book ends with a political crisis that plunges their community into war. I hope the next volume will come out soon!
