Feb. 16th, 2026 03:06 pmThe Magician’s Nephew, by C.S. Lewis. Narnia #6. I’m not exactly fond of the Narnia series – I’m unhappy about what he does to Susan, and the world-building feels casual at best (Santa Claus???). However, I did have a fond memory of this one, specifically, the place between the worlds with all of the pools, and in talking with J about it, I decided to reread the book.
It’s rather odd that before I started reading, all I could remember was that place and something vague about attics. Then when we met a particular character, I also remembered a bunch of wild fuss around the streets of London. Even though I knew the book was a prequel to the rest of the series, I had entirely forgotten the founding of Narnia!
(I had also remembered the pools as purplish, which is not the case at all. My only thought is that Digory compares the richness of that place with a plum-cake, and maybe my brain retained the “plum.”)
Anyway, as a stand-alone book for people who are aware of the world of Narnia, it’s quite lovely.
