Dinotopia, a Land Apart from Time, by James Gurney. As part of J's online community, we recently watched the 1990s miniseries of Dinotopia, and now the original book has been assigned for the community's book club. It's the journal of an American and his son who were shipwrecked on an unknown continent on my birthday in 1862 and who discovered that in this land, humans and sentient dinosaurs have been living in harmony for many generations. The illustrations were done with oil paints, with considerable detail, and many of them are altogether gorgeous. The story is also fun. The entire book is delightful, and the 20th anniversary edition, which we have, also has extended commentary at the end from the author, with bonus illustrations.
