The new apartment!
Sep. 3rd, 2024 11:48 pmToday D and S got the keys to their first apartment. Neither of them has lived away from their mom before, so they have to acquire a lot of furniture and household miscellany - and it's going to be a challenge because the space is very small. I think the total is about 550 square feet. The bedroom is open to the livingroom - it has a strange sort of counter arrangement - and they're going to have to cover that so that D can work in the bedroom. Meanwhile, S will be working a few feet away on the couch.
They got their keys around 2:30 pm and took a look, then D came home to finish his work day. The plan had been for them to bring over S's mom's old couch this evening, which we were going to help with, but they became skeptical that it would fit, so we went over to help measure things instead. So, it's small, but everything is new and seems functional. Personally I wouldn't be able to tune out the passing traffic, but they both seem fine with that. They won't have a bed until Sunday, so they're waiting to move in until then, and I expect things will trickle back and forth between the houses both before and after that.
One useful thing - the refrigerator was obviously plugged in, but J realized that it wasn't turned "on" and none of the rest of us had any idea that a refrigerator could be plugged in without being "on," so it was great that he solved the problem before it had become one. One tiresome thing - when we left and were out in the hallway, I was eager to see the view from the north-facing window, and as I was getting out my phone to photograph it, I dropped my padded water bottle and it shattered! We tried to get all the tiny pieces, but there were so many.
Meanwhile, J is finally processing that he's leaving on a major trip tomorrow... I am so glad that I can just stay home doing my own thing and being helpful to both of them, without all that work.
I'm behind on reading your posts, but I'll catch up soon.

Hugs, helen
