James, by Percival Everett. This book tells the story of Huck Finn from the perspective of his friend Jim, an escaped slave, although of course it's Jim's own story; Huck just happens to be there for much of it. The author is very skilled - the beginning was highly entertaining and I even laughed aloud a few times, and then as the tone changes, the story is remains engaging and is ultimately quite powerful. Highly recommended.
