Jul. 2nd, 2024 11:46 pmThe Poppy War, by R.F. Kuang. Poppy War #1. I read this last year but didn't feel inspired to continue with the trilogy, but this year I am trying again. My next-door neighbor lent me the whole trilogy, in fancy hardcover. It was hard to read this one again, though - it took me more than two months. Maybe it'll be easier to read the other two because I'll want to find out what happens?
Rin is a determined teenage girl who lives in a remote village in a land based on real-world China. Her hard work gets her admitted to the military academy, but she's still an outsider. She has a strange and potentially highly destructive magical power and wants to master it. Meanwhile, her country is invaded by a land based on real-world Japan in the equivalent of the first part of the twentieth century, and a great many atrocities ensue. Meanwhile, our main character becomes increasingly reckless with her skills, making matters worse. The first half of the book is interesting and easy to read, just as many books about young people's education in a special academy can be, but then it gets pretty stressful.
