Long Boat Star Crossing, by Matthew H. Ambrose. My friend BHW invited me to read this book, a self-published science fiction novel by a childhood friend of hers. She'd enjoyed it but doesn't normally read science fiction, so she wondered what I would think. Well, I enjoyed it! Everything that matters for a novel worked well - the plot, the creation and sustaining of the reader's interest, the people, the relationships, etc. He also did a very good job with the sections focusing on technology (most of the spaceship crew had to do a lot of maintenance) - I felt like I could picture what was going on, and that makes a big difference in whether it's going to be enjoyable to read. The only thing really standing in the way of bringing the book up to a professional level was the punctuation and lack of copy-editing more generally, although the punctuation did improve over the course of the book. Anyway, I recommend it, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, but I'll also be writing up my feedback in case he's interested.
