Ecospeak: Rhetoric and Environmental Politics in America, by M. Jimmie Killingsworth and Jacqueline S. Palmer. This 1992 book describes the differences in writing styles of scientists, bureaucrats, science journalists, and a wide variety of advocates. It’s quite interesting, especially as I’d basically forgotten some of the writers they discuss (Barry Commoner, Lester Brown), whom I’d been familiar with back in the 1980s. I wish there were an updated version for today’s environmental writing.
